Overview

SKY is an interactive illuminated kinetic installation that draws inspiration from the white clouds and spans of clear-blue atmosphere that make up the Earth's sky. The work consists of 32 elements, set out in a 65’ wide grid. Each element has an air-jet that can inflate a glowing 16’-tall vertical fabric plume which ascends and surges with pulsations of pressure and swirling motion. Half of the fabric plumes are sky-blue, and half are cloud-white. SKY has eight sensors that detect passing pedestrians and a computer that composes choreographic responses to human movement.

Goals

SKY was commissioned as a temporary public artwork by the City of Perth As the Main Activation for the Perth Winter Arts Season. It was intended to act as a focus for the winter arts festival and draw the attention of the community. It has since been re-installed in central Brisbane as the centrepiece of the Brisbane Curiocity 2019 festival of art, science and technology.

Process

The design was certified for structural soundness by a civil engineer. All electrical systems were inspected an certified by City of Perth Electricians.

Additional Information

SKY was a temporary installation that operated for two weeks in the central city square of Perth, Western Australia. It has also been installed in central Brisbane as the centrepiece of the Brisbane Curiocity 2019 festival of art, science and technology.
