Overview

In 2016, Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital in Barcelona opened its new main hall, an emblematic space, which serves as the principal entrance into the hospital and the central hub connecting the other hospital buildings.

Rai Pinto Studio (interior design) and Rubio Arauna Studio (graphic design), which over the last few years have carried out an environmental design project based on animals playing hide and seek within this hospital’s architecture, devised an interactive environmental concept focused on the human body.

Goals

Using a very simple code of pictograms and requiring active participation from kids, the installations interpret the functions of the human body in an informal and approachable way, creating a playful space where kids can have fun, and at the same time, initiating a conversation about how their own bodies work. As this new main hall is often the first point of entry into the hospital, this project aims to engage the hospital’s young patients and put them at ease, in a place that is typically associated with discomfort and pain.

Five installations have been designed, each one representing a system or an organ:

- The heart
- The digestive system
- The locomotive system
- The brain
- The lungs

Based in the interactive nature of the project, the video shows how each installation works.

Process

The project started when we proposed the human body as the main idea for the new hall, then we presented several interactive and playful installations. Once we decided the potential locations with the client and the architects our design team drew the 5 selected ideas. After that we continued working with the constructor company with unique solutions to make the ideas possible. The constructor team managed a wide variety of professionals such carpenters, metalworkers, software developers, engineers, led specialists and many others.
