  • Brief Description

The Horizon Drive District (HDD, “the District”), a Business Improvement District in Grand Junction, Colorado, and the Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture (GJCAC), an advisory board to GJ City Council, are seeking commissioned artwork for the roundabout being constructed at the intersection of Horizon Drive and 27 ½ Road (G Road). The HDD made previous commitments to public art with the “Mountains and Mustangs” mosaic tiling on the Interstate 70 underpass, the “Wild Horses of Western Colorado” herd of 6 wild horse sculptures in the roundabouts at Horizon Drive and I-70 intersection, two “Electric Box Art,’ pieces, and two GVT bus kiosk art pieces. Along with the GJCAC, the District will be commissioning artwork to enhance the roundabout being constructed in 2024 at the intersection of Horizon Drive and 27 ½ (G) Road. The artwork is assumed to be sculptural and will be sited within the new roundabout. The design of all parts of the sculpture shall be very durable, require minimal maintenance, and be resistant to theft, vandalism, and weathering. They should not cause any kind of safety hazard for traffic or pedestrians. The art should adhere to the highest standards of quality, timelessness, permanence, and general appeal. Examples of media include, but are not limited to: metal, stone, concrete, and fiberglass. The theme selected by the HDD board is “Outdoor Recreation”. In addition, the artwork should complement both I-70 Gateway installations, Wild Horses of Western Colorado, east of Horizon Drive and G Road. Selection will be based on past artwork experience, style, concept, ability to comply with the timeline, and references.
