Overview

Kaleidoscopic forms, angled outward and upward like a telescope echo the dynamic burst of the Big Bang. Evoking the formal qualities of scientific prisms, the triangular tubes are capped with color-changing dichroic glass while the inner surface is a highly polished mirror finish. The triangular tubes become monumental kaleidoscopes that offer visitors a different view of the museum grounds, the sky, and the natural world around them. ‘Cosmic Perception’ becomes an object to be looked at from the inside out, as well as the outside in. This evokes the notion that science encompasses a comprehensive exploration of both inner and outer space.

Goals

The Science Museum of Virginia, located in the heart of Richmond, Virginia, sought to commission an original, large-scale iconic exterior artwork reflecting the theme of science and the Museum’s mission. The artwork was intended to complement the museum’s beautiful architecture and landscape. The public artwork was to serve as a new destination point and source of inspiration for Museum guests, the Richmond community, and tourists alike. The landmark sculpture was envisioned to spark curiosity, encourage discovery, and present ideas through the lens of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
