Overview

Alibaba is at the heart of China’s tech hub and we create a suspension sculpture that is equally forward-facing. The artwork is, in its very nature, the definition of innovation and a perfect example of the future-focused ethos of the city. COSMOS is futuristic and emulates the maverick spirit that drives Alibaba to explore and expand humankind beyond our world, into the exciting unknown. It evokes curiosity about the world in which we live and inspires entrepreneurship and innovation.

Goals

The goal was to create a dynamic and awe-inspiring sculpture that could ignite the imagination of Visitors and partners every day.
The form of the sculpture is inspired by the UAP Unidentified Ariel Phenomenon or UFO and is designed to inspire, energize, and help its audience to imagine an existence much bigger than what we have become accustomed to. COSMOS will deliver a new experience that aims to create a sense of place and universal belonging.

Process

We were influenced by how Newton built the first practical reflecting telescope and developed a sophisticated theory of color based on the observation that a prism separates white light into the colors of the visible spectrum. Newton’s theory helps to define the wide spectrum of light and color that distinguishes COSMOS within its environment.
