Overview

ERASED, 2018 sculpture (photographs printed on dibond, wood, concrete base), 350 cm x 110 cm x 5 cm, installation view

A site-specific sculpture designed for the Middelheim Museum, an open-air sculpture park in Antwerp, approaches the theme of
the human figure omnipresent in the collection of the museum. Rethinking the ancient sculptures that lost their body parts in time,
the headless statue gives a contemporary interpretation to the classics.

Goals

The integration of commissioned artwork into this project aimed to create a profound connection between art and nature, enriching the viewer's experience at Middelheim Park. The sculpture was designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings, encouraging reflection on the relationship between human creations and the environment.
The nature we see is often curated and controlled, reflecting human ideals. The park's arrangement of trees, flowers, and grass is as deliberate as the placement of sculptures, blurring the line between what is natural and what is artistic. The artwork underscores this proximity, emphasizing that both nature and art are shaped by human influence. The three-meter-tall sculpture depicts a man who seems absorbed by the landscape, performing an ambiguous action—perhaps knocking, drawing, or opening an imaginary door. This openness to interpretation engages viewers, encouraging them to reflect on their connections with nature. By using photography as a material, the sculpture shifts between 2D and 3D dimensions, symbolizing the fluid boundaries between reality and representation. Overall, this integration is crucial, enriching the design by inviting viewers to explore and interpret their environment, highlighting the interconnectedness of art and nature.
