Overview

Imagine encountering 10 futuristic bikes scattered throughout downtown Tempe. Each one immerses you in the sounds of local musicians and the visual creativity of our community’s artists as you pedal. It’s not just about staying active—it’s about celebrating the talent and diversity that make Tempe unique. These bikes serve as communal hubs, where residents and visitors alike can come together to appreciate local artistry and forge connections. These interactive installations are more than just exercise equipment; they’re gateways into Tempe’s cultural landscape. With every pedal stroke, you’re swept into a multisensory experience that reflects the vibrant soul of the city.

Goals

Our aim was to invigorate high-traffic spaces where art is not typically encountered. Rather than expecting people to seek out art, we decided to bring it directly to them. Our intention was to commemorate Bike Month while simultaneously showcasing local artists through a distinctive medium. Additionally, the use of bicycles aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability.

Process

Collaborating with 12 local musicians, each tasked with selecting a song to be played from one of the bikes, added a dynamic musical dimension to our project. Additionally, partnering with three local visual artists, each contributing three images to be projected during bike usage, enriched the visual experience and further engaged our audience.
