Overview

MAPP is an interactive, mobile, point-and-shoot video-mapping system, with which imagery is projected from an old-fashioned stroller onto a wall. Participants step into the light to be scanned. Then, within seconds of stepping away, they become part of a colourful projected work of art. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture all the picture-perfect moments!

Goals

MAPP was initially developed to instantly project video mappings on different objects and buildings in public space. The mobile installation makes a scan of its surroundings using the camera and subsequently generates and shows an abstract and moving video mapping. The projection fits exactly into the surroundings. The whole process of scanning and generating only takes a few seconds.

Nowadays, we mainly include people in the scanning process and make them part of the video mapping. If they step aside after the sampling, they still appear in colourful images in the projection.

MAPP is a mix of an interactive projection and a performance. We operate the installation and actively ask people to “step into the light” and become part of the artwork.

Process

The software we use for MAPP is developed by AlexP. The installation consists of a projector, a camera and a fast laptop computer with this custom-made software. Everything is mounted together on an old-fashioned stroller so that it can easily be moved and aimed in all directions.

We developed it as an installation which we can easily take with us around the globe and which is relatively simple to build up at the event location.

Additional Information

MAPP is a mix of an interactive projection and a performance. People can “step into the light” and become part of the artwork. Having already shown this work at several events in Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia, we have the experience that most people, both children and grown-ups, are easily persuaded to participate. It is a real eye-catcher and selfie-magnet, and gives people a very new, surprising and artistic look at themselves. The main reaction from visitors when they first see MAPP is “I have never seen anything like this before!”. Then followed by “WOW!”, “This is amazing!” and off course “how do you do this??”.
