Overview

A forest canopy leads into a brilliant cloud bank in this duet of sculptures for John Muir Health Cancer Center and Outpatient Specialty Center in Walnut Creek, CA. To celebrate the philosophy of John Muir, one embarks on a nature walk upon entering the double-height lobby. Familiar leaves line arched branches overhead, creating a warm, comforting space beneath a forest canopy. The canopy filters light onto the floor yet reaches toward the sky, guiding visitors through the space. Heading up to the second level, colorful clouds are suspended overhead, reminiscent of the beautiful sunrises seen from Mount Diablo and the nearby hills. Dynamic shadows, created through the transparency of the perforated aluminum material, shift with the light to form an ever-changing environment. Glossy, powder coating finishes in vibrant hues complement the shine of the terrazzo floor and harness the abundant natural light of the space.

Dimensions: 33′ L x 21′ W x 10′ H, 30′ L x 25′ W x 8′ H
Materials: Perforated Aluminum, Aluminum Tubing

Goals

The client, John Muir Health, wished to commission artworks that reflect the guiding principles and the nature theme of the existing campus and art collection. It was very important that the site-specific sculptures be the focal point of the two lobby entrances, and provide a peaceful, calm, and inviting environment. The artworks also assist with wayfinding, as well as promote health and wellness. Optimizing the various views throughout the space, and being mindful of patient experience for those with longer visits were also considered.

Process

The extensive collaboration process included the Andrea Schwartz Gallery, John Muir Health, SmithGroup, Art Research Enterprises and the contractor. The design phase included the creation of a digital fly-through along with a design package for presentation to the City of Walnut Creek Arts Commission, for approvals. Close coordination for the design of the suspension system, before the ceiling was closed, occurred early on.
The arching branches of the "tree" were carefully crafted by Art Research Enterprises. We worked closely with them as they integrated the perforated leaves seamlessly into the rolled aluminum. A custom mounting system was engineered, making the installation of the artwork quick and simple.
