Overview

Quetzalcóatl Reborn. Honoraria Project of Burning Man Animalia 2023.
Crescent Art Collective by Leyla Brashka and Lisa Regan.

The philosophy of this project is to honor Mexico´s prehispanic legacy through Quetzalcóatl, the feathered serpent, creator of humanity and who gave us the corn. Is the most powerful God of Mesoamerica, representative of our sacred heritage that lives in us as Mexicans, being us also Quetzalcóatl.

It is an itinerant Project that spreads the rich ancestral wisdom that Mexico have as a Country, full of diverse cultures, traditions and rituals that remain until today. Offering prehispanic dance, medicine chants and cacao ceremony to Quetzalcóatl at each place it rises. Being present at public spaces and Festivals at Mexico and soon part of Arte Laguna Prize 2024 in Venice.

Quetzalcóatl is a high scale interactive sculpture.
It´s structure is made of 5/16 metal plate, 8.8 mts wide and 3.3 mts high.
It has a corn tail music instrument with drums, to interact with Quetzalcóatl and play music.
Stained glass prehispanic symbols at his snake body and led lights to glow at night.

Quetzalcoatl is reborn, comes to remind us that we are Gods, a beautiful hybrid between our divinity and our humanity. Reminding us, we are the creators of our reality.

Goals

Integrating commissioned artwork is the core of Quetzalcóatl Reborn Project. Quetzalcóatl high scale sculpture, is for our Collective more than an artwork, the actual representation of Quetzalcóatl and it is honored this way, offering prehispanic dance, chants and rituals in every place he rises.

The integration of Quetzalcóatl in this Project is crucial to share interactively and ludicly the great importance of reconnecting with our ancestral heritage, with our roots and where we come from.

The commitment to community engagement resonates in the sculpture´s creation. Rooted in its heritage, Quetzalcóatl invites viewers to explore its multiple dimensions, enriched by interactive elements that inspire ritualistic engagement.

The community creates music through rhythmic drumming on the corn kernels at his tail. The vibrant rays of light that shine through the stained glass symbolise the pouring of ancient wisdom, re-fertilizing the earth.

Quetzalcóatl serves as a ceremonial portal, fostering a connection among participants, viewers, and the Earth.

Process

The collaboration process is a very crucial part of this Project. It is created by Crescent Art Collective by sculptor artists Leyla Brashka and Lisa Regan along with a multidisciplinary team of Mexican and American people coming together to give life to Quetzalcóatl, the most important Mesoamerican God of all times.

Co creating from different parts of México and the United States was a great challenge and a great accomplisment at the same time.

Lead artists Lisa and Leyla, in love with mexican culture and wanting to share it to the world , co created Quetzalcóatl Reborn Project.

The Project started unfolding at Mahahual being both there. Later on Leyla Brashka traveled to Torreón, Coahuila, her home town, collaborating with Casa Montaña to create the stained glass and to Mexico City for the drum creation with Arturo.

Lisa Regan, founder of Garden Deva company for metal works at Tulsa Oklahoma, her home town, was in charge of creating along with Cristopher Regan and all the build team Quetzalcóatl structure.

Main collaborations happened at Torreón and Tulsa, Everything else at distance with the help of techonology.
