Client: V Hotel

Overview

The V Hotel sits on the famed Boardwalk of Venice Beach in an historic 1913 brick building. This new, boutique hotel features a full restaurant, bar, lobby, and retail space, private rooftop bar and grill, and 33 unique rooms. The local artists and the Dogtown culture of Venice inspire the concept for the hotel. Each room features local art and is styled to give guests a taste of living like a Venice local for a night. The Penthouse floor features 6 separate “bungalows” with private decks. Among hotel amenities, selected by RA, are surfboards and skateboards

Goals

Inspiration for the Venice V Hotel came from my own personal experience growing up and living in Venice. As a young boy, I ate breakfast with my parents at the ground-floor (Lafayette) café. Along with my 20 years of hospitality design experience, my goal was to capture the gritty, beautiful, and weird energy of Venice Beach in a sorely needed, local, high-end boutique hotel. The authenticity of the designs comes from the passion the owner, and all the design partners associated with the project, have for the community

Process

• The lobby mural of Venice’s iconic founder About Kinney embodies our approach to designing this project—bridging the historic and contemporary aspects of Venice. While checking in, guests are greeted by a 450 sq. Ft. Wall mural portrait made from colorful skate wheels. It’s intended a playful take on history, and also makes for a damn fine instagram background
