Overview

May + Watkins created these sculptural benches to provide seating and an oasis of shade for pedestrians and bicycle travelers. The imagery is drawn from oak trees that thrive in eastern Fort Bend County. There is a leaf partition that divides the bench of the larger sculpture. Each side varies in color and shape. We invite you to sit on both sides and explore the experience. The larger bench is 14-ft H X 11-ft L X 6-ft D. The smaller bench is12-ft H by 4.5-ft W by 4.5-ft D. We used a combination of ss pipe, mesh and plate as well as aluminum plate and shaped translucent polycarbonate.

Goals

These benches were designed to be site-specific signature sculptures at the start of the connector trails between the Brazos River and Memorial Parks in Sugarland, TX. We wanted to create functional pieces that also served as a destination and meeting point. These benches were sited at the trailheads to several biking and hiking trails to create destination markers for those using the park.

Process

We worked closely with Sharee Davis and other members of the Public Art team in Sugarland, as well as members of the community. The Sugarland Public Art team is terrific, and they have a wide spectrum of exciting public works in their collection.
